UTA takes election enlightenment to the grassroots

In preparation for the 2023 General Elections in Nigeria, the UTA takes their enlightenment campaign for a successful and hitch free elections to the grassroots


The United Towns Agency for North-South Cooperation (UTA), a United Nations accredited Non-Governmental Organisation recently organized a sensitization campaign in preparation for the forthcoming 2023 general election in Nigeria. The enlightenment campaign which falls within the ambit of one of the objectives of the organization, which is the promotion of human rights perspectives in all areas including development, peace and humanitarian affairs took place at the Palace of His Royal Highness, Alhaji Usman Nga-Kupi, the Sa’peyi of Garki, Abuja on the 16th of February, 2023.

The event was attended by a representative from the Department of State Service (DSS), representative from INEC and members of Abuja Municipal Area Council, which comprises of the Chiefs, the elders, women and youth leaders. According to the Country-President of UTA, Princess Abigail Amalaha who led the team, the sensitization was aimed at preparing the people for the forth coming election by educating them on their right to vote and the need for them to cast their votes according to their conscience. She further explains to them the importance of exercising their franchise which is one of their fundamental human rights as citizens of Nigeria. She implores them to avoid any situation that will bring them, their family and community to disrepute like fighting, thuggery or any form of electioneering malpractice.

In his welcome message, the Sapeyi of Garki who doubles as the Chairman, Board of Trustees of UTA, expressed appreciation to the UTA team for the novel idea of taking election sensitization to the grassroots. He assured that his people will comport themselves creditably well during and after the elections. He went further to assure the INEC representative of the readiness of his council members and subjects, but urged INEC to put every necessity in place before the election in other not to discourage his people from casting their votes. He also advised that aspirants caught sharing money to the masses to buy their votes should be disqualified to serve as a deterrent to others.

The Sapeyi also urged the DSS and INEC officials to be neutral in the course of the election. He went further to caution his council members and his subjects to avoid generating chaos, riots or any form of unruly behaviour during the election. The DSS representative in his remark assured that the security agencies were fully ready for the election and that the security and safety of the voters are assured and that their votes will count.

In the same vain, the INEC representative equally guaranteed the Council of a free and fair election, reaffirming that INEC officials were fully prepared for the election. She assured them that all the challenges which they experienced in the course of the last election have been taken care of and that the forthcoming 2023 elections will be hitch free.
