Nigeria @ 59: Are We On Course?
Nigeria marks her Fifty Nine Years of existence as a sovereign nation with much expectations from the people.
October 2019 • Publisher's Note
October is one of the most important months in Nigeria’s calendar. It is perhaps the most important. The day is observed
as the National Day, the day the country attained its independence from Britain. It was precisely on October 1, 1960
that Nigeria got its independence from Britain, courtesy of the efforts of its heroes like Nnamdi Azikiwe, Tafawa
Balewa, Obafemi Awolowo, Sir Ahmadu Bello, Anthony Enahoro and several others. Their efforts as well as those of their
predecessors like Herbert Macaulay, Mrs Ransome Kuti, the Aba Women, largely contributed to the freedom we are enjoying
today as a people and as a nation.
This year marked the 59th anniversary of Nigeria as a nation, and we have packaged it, rightfully as the lead report for
this edition of our magazine.
We also have one of the most exciting interviews packaged by us. Our guest in the current edition is His Excellency, the
Ambassador of Japan to Nigeria, Yutaka Kikuta. He could pass as one of the most exciting diplomats in Nigeria today. The
session with the amiable diplomat is one of the best interview sessions we have had in a long time. We also have his
elegant secretary, Chiemi Osada to thank for facilitating the interview It was an exciting moment for me and my team as
the Ambassador spoke to us on a number of issues including Nigeria’s national anthem, which he rates as one of the best
in the world. Find out his best Nigerian delicacies.
As part of our journalistic duty of recognizing hardwork and excellence, we x-ray in our special report, the unassuming,
hardworking and resilient Director General of FCT Emergency Management Agency, Alhaji Abbas Idriss. The piece on him and
the Agency will appeal to you.
