Edition 12: Fireworks For 2023 Presidency: Which Zone Gets it?

The entire humanity is at an important milestone of a season: A watershed between the end of a year and the beginning of another one. The year, 2020, is coming inexorably to an end, while we are equally set to witness a brand new one, 2021. My team of editors and I felt we should come out with a publication that will reflect the outgoing year, while at the same time ushering in a new one. This is why we captured a recap of major events that shaped the outgoing year, while hoping that the new one will bring in more refreshing developments to humanity and Nigerians in particular. 2020 was a year many would want to put behind them, especially for the advent of COVID-19 pandemic which devastated the world, especially the People’s Republic of China, Europe and America, even playing a key role in the outcome of US elections. Nigerians are still feeling the pinch of the pandemic with the nation’s economy enmeshed in a second recession in five years.

We have the big one, our cover report, which is on politics. Although 2023 is barely three years away, it is occupying prominent place in the nation’s media and discourse. Which zone of the Federation, will produce the successor of President Buhari in the power equation? The consensus tilts towards the need to make the South East take the next shot at the highest office being the one, or two zones that has not produced a leader for the nation since the late Aguiyi Ironsi occupied the office, for barely six months 54 years ago. Our analysis on this tries to x-ray this and other contending issues that will shape the unfolding 2023 politics, the fireworks and intrigues among the various political parties, especially the APC and PDP. Related to this is the return of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu as INEC chairman, the first election umpire to get a second term mandate. Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajiya Sadiya Umar Farouq, the super minister opened up on her achievements in the last one year.
