NNPC Achieves Milestone On OB3 Gas Pipeline

The NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company (NGIC), a subsidiary of NNPC Limited, has successfully completed the River Niger Crossing for the 130-kilometre Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben (OB3) Gas Pipeline, marking a significant breakthrough in the expansion of Nigeria’s national gas transmission network.


Bashir Ojulari, Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of NNPC Limited, praised the achievement as a testament to disciplined execution and technical excellence. In a statement released on Thursday, April 30, 2026, Ojulari stated that the successful crossing unlocked the full potential of the OB3 pipeline, a strategic piece of infrastructure designed to transport two billion standard cubic feet (bscf) of gas daily. The crossing, which was executed approximately two kilometers beneath the River Niger, was completed using advanced Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) technology by the NNPC project team in partnership with PCE Nig. Limited. Ojulari highlighted the technical complexity of the task and commended the team for their effort in overcoming one of the most challenging sections of the project.

“This achievement builds on NNPC Limited’s growing engineering and execution capability,” Ojulari remarked. He also noted that the successful OB3 River Niger Crossing followed the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) River Niger crossing in June 2025, which provided the foundation for delivering even more complex projects in the Niger Delta environment.He emphasized that the OB3 pipeline is crucial to Nigeria’s energy security and economic development, as it strengthens the country’s gas supply reliability, supports power generation, and fosters industrial growth. Ojulari praised the efforts of all those involved in completing the project and acknowledged the vital support from key stakeholders, including President Bola Tinubu’s Gas-to-Prosperity agenda, which created a conducive business environment for the achievement.

The OB3 pipeline, which has a capacity of two billion standard cubic feet per day, now connects Nigeria’s gas-producing regions to the rest of the country. It serves as a key infrastructure link between the Eastern and Western gas networks, extending connectivity to the Northern corridor through the AKK pipeline. Ojulari also praised the trust and guidance of NNPC Limited’s Board of Directors, led by Chairman Mr. Ahmadu Kida. Looking forward, he reaffirmed NNPC’s commitment to leveraging Nigeria’s oil and gas resources to improve living standards for all citizens and further contribute to national economic growth. This milestone aligns with the Nigerian government’s target to reach three million barrels of crude oil production per day and 12 billion standard cubic feet of gas per day by 2030, setting the stage for continued growth in the oil and gas sector.
